Terberg Machines and the Kliko company have developed the KTZ system, an extremely efficient, reliable, and safe waste collection system for underground containers that uses the latest of proven technologies.

The system consists of two main components, a 5 m3 underground waste container with a specially designed deposit point, and a collection vehicle specifically developed by Terberg Machines and featuring a side-loading system that enables a single driver/operator to empty 5 m3 containers using a fully automated process.

The design’s salient feature is its focus on health and safety.
The KTZ system is suitable for use anywhere in new and existing residential areas, including town centres and redeveloped neighbourhoods, as well as in commercial centres. The underground facilities consist of a concrete well fitted with a guide frame inside which sits a top-loading, galvanised liner container with a capacity of 5 m3. The well is secured by a hinged cover that carries the deposit point.

The underground system can be fitted with a GPS system to communicate such information as waste levels to a central data server.

The underground system includes an energy point that is activated by an energy transmitter in the collecting vehicle to open the hinged cover at an angle slightly over 90 degrees.

The automatic side-loading system picks up the top-loading liner container, empties it, and accurately replaces it in its original position.

With the underground system located along the roadside, the open well cover together with the collecting vehicle and its pair of safety barriers create a perfectly secure work area.

The system has been extensively tested by TNO Work and Employment department for compliance with health and safety standards.

Terberg Machines provides the vehicle component of the system with a CE IIA statement of conformity to the European Machine Directive.

The side-loader is operated fully automatically from within the vehicle cab, by a single driver/operator using an ergonomically designed, movable control panel and a pair of CCTV monitors. The system uses hand and foot switches that force the operator to focus attention on the monitor displays.

The foot switch acts as a dead man’s pedal so the side-loader stops moving immediately if the operator releases the switch. The vision system ensures accurate locking of the automatic docking system with the liner container.

The total collection cycle for a container takes approximately 3 minutes from the moment the collecting vehicle arrives to the time it is ready to move off again.

The collecting vehicle’s 20 m3 compacting container, supplied by Schenk B.V. of Oosterhout, the Netherlands offers an equivalent load capacity of about 10 tons.

The KTZ collection system in combination with underground waste containers offers the following benefits:
  • Simple, top-loading liner containers, with fully sealed bottom.
  • No risk of leakage during liner container transfer.
  • Clearly marked and safe work area, fully secured on all sides.
  • Ergonomically designed single-person operation from within the vehicle cab.
  • Practically zero risk of operator errors.
  • Highly reliable docking system using twist locks.
  • Fast 3-minute collection cycle for minimum traffic delays.
  • Low liner container maintenance and cleaning costs.
  • Manoeuvrable short wheelbase vehicle.
